The CDMO World team recently returned from DCAT Week, held March 23–26 across New York City, where five team members—Kevin Bittorf, Ray Sison, Emma Trivella, Myrna Monck, and Craig Mooney—immersed themselves in one of the biopharma industry’s most dynamic annual gatherings. Known for its citywide format, DCAT brings together leaders across the pharmaceutical and CDMO ecosystem for a fast-paced series of meetings, panels, and networking events designed to foster collaboration, deal-making, and innovation in drug development, as described by DCAT as a forum where the industry connects across the full value chain in an intentionally relationship-driven environment.

Throughout the week, the team conducted a series of interviews with CDMO leaders, capturing perspectives that will be a part of an upcoming interview saga: the CDMO Leadership Series. These conversations highlighted how organizations are evolving to meet increasing demand for specialized capabilities, operational agility, and long-term strategic partnerships. A recurring theme across discussions was not just growth, but a more measured and disciplined re-engagement across the industry following a period of uncertainty.

CDMO World founder, Kevin Bittorf, noted that the tone across conversations reflected a subtle but meaningful shift in momentum: “What stood out at DCAT is that the recovery isn’t loud—but it’s real. Projects are reactivating, conversations are more actionable, and capital is beginning to find its way back into the system. It’s not a snap-back—it’s a re-acceleration, and it’s happening in a much more disciplined way than before.”

He further emphasized the importance of DCAT as a place where these early signals become visible before they show up in formal data or reports: “That’s why DCAT continues to matter. Pharma doesn’t always move in a straight line—or on a public timeline. Some of the clearest signals come from listening closely in rooms like this, before the shift becomes obvious in the data.” Across many of the team’s conversations, there was a shared recognition that informal dialogue at events like DCAT often reveals more about industry direction than headline announcements.

Expanding on this sentiment, Bittorf added that capital flows and project activity are beginning to re-emerge in a more selective way: “If you were paying attention at DCAT, the message was pretty clear: the money is there—it just hasn’t been in a hurry. Now it’s starting to move. Projects are coming back, conversations are getting real again, and companies are making more deliberate bets on where they want to build long-term resilience.” This emphasis on selectivity and discipline echoed throughout the CDMO discussions the team captured.

Beyond individual insights, the interviews collectively pointed to a CDMO landscape that is becoming increasingly sophisticated in how it allocates capacity, builds capability, and structures partnerships. Leaders spoke about the importance of flexibility in manufacturing networks, investment in advanced modalities, and the growing expectation that CDMOs act as strategic collaborators rather than transactional service providers. The tone was cautiously optimistic, grounded in execution rather than speculation.

Between meetings and events, the team also had the opportunity to experience New York City, adding another layer to the intensity of the week. From navigating tightly packed schedules to informal conversations over meals and evening gatherings, these moments reinforced the human side of an industry often defined by technical complexity. As CDMO World prepares to launch the CDMO Leadership Series, the insights gathered at DCAT will help shape an ongoing exploration of how the sector is evolving—and where the most meaningful signals of change are emerging.

We are looking forward to what DCAT Week 2027 holds!
